By Chris Howard

Are you your own best cheerleader? Cheering yourself on, every step of the way as you achieve your goals makes all the difference. You are most likely to achieve a greater amount of success, achieve your goals faster and stay on track when you encounter obstacles if you are a formidable cheerleader for yourself and others!

Take the following quiz to find out if you are your own best cheerleader. You'll also gain some great tips on how to put even more cheerleading in your life!

1. What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

a) Jump out of your bed with a feeling of excitement and you seize the day!

b) Feeling great as you think about all you want to achieve today.

c) Peel yourself off your bed, drag yourself to the shower and begrudgingly drive to work with the attitude of "another day - another dollar."

d) Zzzzzz...The snooze button is such a handy function, isn't it?

2. You encounter a major setback in one of your goals. What would you most likely do?

a) You pour all of your energy into finding a solution as you acknowledge that all setbacks are temporary, provide positive learnings and ultimately get you closer to your goal!

b) Although you feel the pressure, you take action immediately. You know you can do it!

c) It seems overwhelming and you question whether to move forward with your goal. You call a friend for help and advice.

d) You acknowledge that it's a major setback and are inclined to give up

3. You pitch an idea to a friend, colleague, family member or an acquaintance and it is shot down in flames. What do you do?

a) You simply take any constructive feedback, delete the rest and move forward feeling great about yourself.

b) You are a little annoyed but take any feedback that serves you and ignore the rest.

c) You feel a little hurt and unsure about your idea now. You consult a friend for a second opinion.

d) You feel insulted, so you criticise your critic. Then you go on to delete this person off your speed dial, email contacts and your Christmas card list.

4. You are having one of “those days,” where everything that could possibly go wrong, goes wrong. How do you tackle such a day?

a) You look at the day as the comedy of errors that it was, and fall down laughing!

b) You do your best to get everything fixed and then look at the bright side. Then you decide that tomorrow will be a great day!

c) You blame yourself for everything that went wrong and your vocabulary is full of should-I, could-I and would-I.

d) You blame everybody else for everything that went wrong and get really frustrated and angry with anyone who crosses your path.

Calculate Your Score
Calculate your score by using the following table:

a = 4 points
b = 3 points
c = 2 points
d = 1 point

Total Score 14 – 16 points. Congratulations!!! You are your own best cheerleader - the quintessential cheerleader!!! You see the glass as always half full not half empty. You love a challenge and have exceptionally positive self-talk. No matter what happens you have this knack to always look at the bright side and preserve the positive learnings. You are a real people person and you always have something positive to say. People love your energy. You are on track with your goals and nothing can stop you!!!

Total Score 9 – 13 points. You are awesome cheerleader for yourself and others. People like to be around you because you are generally positive. Most of the time you are cheering yourself on. Sometimes you can get a little down on yourself but it isn’t long before you get all fired up and get back on track. Remember that there can be many obstacles on the way to success so embrace each and every one of these obstacles because they bring you closer to achieving your goals.

Total Score 6 – 8 points. You are an amazing part-time cheerleader!! What needs to happen in order for you to become a full-time cheerleader for yourself and others? Confidence is about taking risks and preserving the positive learnings or celebrating the outcomes of taking those risks. You love learning new things and taking a few risks. If a risk didn’t pay off, take the opportunity to grow and preserve the positive learnings instead of dwelling on what went wrong. If you do this you will be your own best cheerleader in no time!!

Total Score 5 or less. Let’s be honest, you could use some help in the cheerleading department. You are the only person that can decide to bounce out of bed, feel excited about your day, take on the world an achieve everything your heart desires. All you need to do is close your eyes for a moment and remember a time when you felt incredibly enthusiastic, when you were bursting with energy and you cheered yourself on. See what you saw, hear what you were saying to yourself and the things you heard and feel those feeling of complete and total enthusiasm permeating every cell in your body. Do this exercise every morning and every night for as long as it takes to cheer yourself and others on again!
